Medical Device Reimbursement – The Right Questions to Ask!

Date: April 12, 2019
Duration: 60 Minutes
Time: 12 PM EST

Reimbursement is the act of repaying a party the money spent or lost for a service, product or technology. In the United States, every year, health care insurance companies alone, process over 5 billion claims for the people. Strategic planning of reimbursement is crucial in the life science field, especially as it concerns medical devices. It is important to understand, prepare for, and react to changes in clinical policies, insurance reimbursement and insurer coverage issues, in the earliest stages of its development. Our objective is to safeguard the future return on your device investment now.

The Pink Sheet quoted, “Reimbursement risks are probably as important these days as regulatory (risks). Reimbursement is part of the economic equation as investors ask whether insurers will pay and what, if any authorized reimbursement codes are available for the product.” What is a medical device without reimbursement?

Why you should attend? How will your product be reviewed and reimbursed?
The most important objective before engaging in commercialization activities for your product is to know how the customers would review it after its launch.
Some of the key questions to ask are:
  1. Are there insurer policies that will impede or endorse your product in the marketplace?
  2. Is there apt clinical peer-reviewed literature that affirms the effective use of your product in the marketplace?
  3. If covered, is reimbursement adequate to justify widespread deployment of the product?
  4. Is there coding for your device technology? Are there existing APC, CPT, ICD-10-CM and HCPCS codes that give a detailed account of the device and/or the procedure? Or will a new code be needed?
Areas Covered in the Session:
  1. You will have a better understanding and will successfully be able to answer the questions asked by Doctors, Hospitals, Sales and Insurers.
  2. In this overview, you will learn about the basics of coverage, coding and reimbursement.
  3. As a manufacturer, you will understand more about the antecedent planning that goes into coverage, coding and payment choices for your product. (It does not begin with FDA approval.)
  4. You will be able to navigate more efficiently, the various aspects of reimbursement planning for a newly-approved, innovative and modestly established product, that may have no coverage, code, or minimal or no payment.
